Client: Bulkington Surgery
Location: Bedworth, Warwickshire
Project Period: February 2024

For healthcare providers, security needs to work quietly and reliably in the background. It should protect staff, patients, and the building itself, while being easy to manage and never interfering with the delivery of care. When systems generate false alarms, lack clear visibility, or are supported inconsistently, security quickly becomes an operational burden rather than a source of reassurance.

Bulkington Surgery, a well-established GP practice in Warwickshire, was facing exactly these challenges – prompting the team to seek a more dependable and supportive security solution.

Ongoing Issues With a Legacy Alarm System

Dr. Paul contacted FHA Security after repeated problems with the surgery’s existing intruder alarm system. False activations were frequent, a faulty keypad was causing daily frustration, and previous service providers had failed to resolve issues despite multiple visits.

Response times were inconsistent, faults were not fixed in single visits, and confidence in the system had steadily declined. For a busy GP surgery operating throughout the week, this was becoming a significant challenge.

A Clear Plan Ahead

Our first step was a detailed site assessment focused on system reliability, usability, and operational impact.

We identified fundamental design and configuration issues within the legacy system, including poor device programming, limited user control, and no remote management capability. The system also lacked clear activity reporting, making it difficult to understand who was accessing the building and when.

Rather than pushing a single outcome, we presented two clearly defined options:

  • Repair and optimise the existing system to restore basic functionality

or

  • Replace the system entirely with a modern burglar alarm offering improved reliability, user hierarchy control, app access, and monitored alarm response

Following a clear explanation of both approaches, the team at Bulkington Surgery chose a full system upgrade, based on long-term usability and control.

Installation Without Disruption

One of our main challenges was the surgery’s high weekday occupancy, since all the work needed to be without interrupting crucial patient care.

To address this, alarm installation was scheduled over a weekend, allowing the legacy system to be decommissioned and the new alarm installed without impacting staff or patients. The transition was completed smoothly, with no disruption to the clinic’s operations.

Designed for Accountability and Ease of Use

The new system provides full perimeter protection, glass break detection, and internal motion detection, all configured to reduce false alarms and improve zoning accuracy.

Each user now has individual access credentials, supported by app-based control and detailed activity logs. Time-based access restrictions are in place for out-of-hours access, giving the surgery greater oversight of cleaners and contractors.

Separate training sessions were delivered:

  • General staff training focused on day-to-day use
  • Dedicated training for Dr. Paul and the Practice Manager, covering full user management, access permissions, and system reporting

This approach ensured confidence across the team while maintaining senior-level control.

Ongoing Support and Proactive Maintenance

With our extended maintenance plan, FHA Security continues to provide proactive support. System issues can now be diagnosed and resolved remotely, reducing downtime and avoiding unnecessary site visits.

As noted in Dr. Paul’s testimonial below, faults have been identified and fixed within minutes, sometimes before the practice even needed to be called.

“From our first phone call, it was clear they cared about our security concerns and issues we had with the current system…We found FHA’s service proactive and easily accessible 7 days a week. They always contact us in advance to book service visits, schedule engineer visits either first thing in the morning or at lunch breaks to avoid disruptions to our service. When we had a system error, they worked on it remotely, and advised as it was fixed within 30 minutes of the fault appearing – we didn’t even have to call them. Exceptional service.”

The Result: Peace of Mind for Staff and Patients

Today, Bulkington Surgery operates with a modern, dependable intruder alarm system that supports a busy healthcare environment rather than disrupting it. False alarms have been eliminated, system visibility has improved, and staff have confidence in how the system works and who is using it.
